The Wouxun KG-1000G Plus is one of the most capable GMRS mobile radios available. With 50 watts of power, a color display, and an extensive feature set, it has become a top choice for serious GMRS operators who want a radio that can do it all.

Why it's popular

The KG-1000G Plus stands out from other GMRS mobiles because of its sheer versatility. It offers cross-band receive, meaning you can monitor ham VHF/UHF frequencies and FRS channels in addition to GMRS. The built-in SWR meter is a feature rarely found on GMRS radios and lets you verify your antenna system is working properly without extra equipment. The detachable control head option makes it easier to mount in vehicles with limited dash space.

Key specs

Getting started

  1. Mount the radio securely in your vehicle or at a base station. Ensure good ventilation around the unit since 50W generates heat.
  2. Connect power directly to your vehicle battery or a 12V power supply (not the cigarette lighter — the radio draws too much current).
  3. Install your antenna and use the built-in SWR meter to verify it reads below 2.0:1 on the GMRS frequencies you plan to use.
  4. Program your channels either via the front panel, CHIRP, or the Wouxun CPS software.

Tip: The KG-1000G Plus has many advanced settings — power-on messages, display colors, key assignments, and scan options — that are only accessible through the Wouxun CPS (Customer Programming Software). If you want full control over the radio, download CPS from the Wouxun website in addition to using CHIRP.

Programming with CHIRP

The KG-1000G Plus is supported by CHIRP. Select "Wouxun KG-1000G Plus" as the model when setting up. You will need a Wouxun USB programming cable (USB-K1 connector type). CHIRP handles channel frequencies, names, power levels, CTCSS/DCS tones, and duplex settings well.

However, some advanced settings — display colors, power-on message text, key assignments, and certain scan behaviors — are only available through Wouxun's own CPS software. For most operators, CHIRP covers what you need for day-to-day channel programming.

For a complete walkthrough of the CHIRP software, see the Programming with CHIRP guide.
